The holiday season=Holiday decorating=I live for this time of the year!

It starts with Diwali (end of Oct -early Nov) for me. When I was growing up, our home was decorated from Diwali all the way till new years. We changed the decor to match the holidays, but the overall festive decorations were themed the same. My parents hosted several several holidays parties and table decorations, centerpieces and lighting were my favorite parts. My mother, my sister and I would always come up with such creative, dramatic and economical arrangements and I longed for the holidays even more than my birthday. Well, actually my birthday just happens to fall during this time so YAY for me!!

For those of you who are still looking for inspiration for Thanksgiving decor, I thought I would make your life easier by compiling a few ideas that I thought stood out and are easy to implement last minute.

Oh and don’t forget to take pics of your Thanksgiving decorations. They can be as simple or as elaborate. Send them to me and I will post them on Mochatini.

I’m flying out to Denver tomorrow, but will be on Mochatini too, so if you have any suggestions, ideas or need any of those, drop me a line.

On Friday I thought we wouldn’t be able to have our fireplace working until after Thanksgiving weekend, but thanks to Mr. Mochatini, we did start the fire after all. With temperature in the early 30s, I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to have the fire warming the house. I have been traveling a lot recently and am getting ready for another one this week, so it was wonderful to have some down time at home.

This fireplace was one of the main reasons we fell in love with our house. I plan to install EPA certified modern fireplaces in the other rooms in the next few years.

This week is Thanksgiving week in the US and we will be visiting Mr. Mochatini’s family in Colorado. But before we leave, I have a few posts planned for you.

- Pre-Thanksgiving special post on the launch of Atlantis in Dubai

- International Visions Art Gallery in DC. I visited them this weekend and they have some great openings coming up.

- Reusable lunch box – available at Mocha Design Store

What are your plans for Thanksgiving? How do you celebrate it? Any family traditions related to Thanksgiving that you would like to share?

I have waited almost half a year to do this post. And on days like today, I want to do little else than snuggle up by the fire with a full bodied Bordeux, Angelo Badalamenti and Mr. Mochatini (blush). Snuggle up I will; but sans fireplace. We are yet to schedule the chimney sweep and his nod before we fire it up. Hopefully we get to that after Thanksgiving.

These modern fireplaces make you wish winter lasted all year long (well, almost wish). I love the see-though ones for their aesthetics and function in more than one space.

I was in St. Thomas USVI and just got back yesterday. It was a really great honeymoon vacation. While I collect, compile and organize my stuff for you, I thought I would share my post on 2Modern’s Design Talk. It was about a fascinating commercial architectural project in Mumbai, India.

Earlier this year Wadhwa Developers commissioned James Law Cybertecture to create an office unlike any other in Mumbai, India. Cybertecture Egg, an egg-shaped office building brings together iconic architecture, environmental design, intelligent systems, and new engineering to create a fascinating structure in the city. The concept of this unique design was inspired by planets and sustainable ecosystems. Elements of the design and intelligence systems will work together to give this office building’s occupants a great place to work. Throughout the building, a series of innovative systems will be implemented. One such system, “Cybertecture Health”, is designed to monitor office worker’s health. Data collected may be retrieved or sent to a doctor if necessary. The Egg is skewed at an angle to alleviate the solar gain of the building. Building at this angle uses 10-20% less surface area as compared to a conventional building.

The rooftop green space dissipates heat while the building harnesses solar and wind power. Cooling of the building will be provided by an elevated garden consisting of natural vegetation. Another important element is the water conservation feature that will be controlled thanks to a greywater recycling system for irrigation and landscaping. Within the building, an innovative structure derived from the skin of the egg creates up to 30m spans of columnless floors. The Cybertecture Egg will be completed by the end of 2010. Talk about inspirational workspaces.

Have a great weekend.

Last week I was in Dubai, UAE. The purpose of my visit was primarily to spend time with my parents. My father is recovering from a health set-back and I was really glad to be with them. For me, time with family is precious and never enough. And it doesn’t help when you are thousands and thousands of miles from them. This time my trip coincided with my birthday and Diwali, a major India holiday. So we made the best of it all.

Dubai as you may know is constantly changing and growing. Construction cranes and noise from drilling is everywhere. But if you can push past that, there are some remarkable places to see. Everything is upscale and grand. My first stop was the Palm Jumeriah. You may have heard of three Palm tree shaped man-made islands being constructed in Dubai. The Palm Jumeirah is the first of the trilogy to be near complete. Some of the gorgeous homes here have been occupied and the famous Atlantis resort opened their doors here in late September.

My design inspiration came from the various light fixtures that I came across. Some very unique and some traditional. And yes I accept that I am obsessed with hanging light fixtures, chandeliers, candles, lanterns…… In case you haven’t noticed :-) . I find them oh soo irresistible and festive.

This first three images are from a boutique in the Atlantis resort. I spent a lot of time just admiring this light fixture. I tried to find out who the designer was but all I found out was it is a Lebanese designer. If any of you happen to know the designer, let me know. I found the placement of four of these together even more appealing.

ROYAL MIRAGE

One of my favorite hotels in the world. An obvious choice for high-tea on my birthday. My photography skills, or the lack thereof, don’t do justice to any of these gorgeous Middle-Eastern lantern-like pendant lights. Mostly metallic and stained glass, the work on some of these is intricate and very Arabian nights. I want one for every room in my house. And then some.

THE ONE

The One is a lifestyle/ interiors store in Dubai. They don’t have much of a presence online, so I tried my best to take decent pictures in their store. The first thing I thought of when I saw this was room divider that is so easy to DIY. Fairy lights and some buttons. Of course, you can expect step by step instructions on this one soon. I think this curtain made of fairy lights would be so fairytale like in bedrooms.

I fell in love with these metallic pod chandeliers. Silver hanging and table lamps with intricate patterns. They had just arrived in the store that day. I couldn’t move away from them. And guess what?? I got one as a birthday present from my parents, along with a bunch of other awesome accessories. I can’t wait to hang the small one in my dining room.

As for the other presents and accessories that I mentioned, well you wont have to wait too long. And there is a surprise. Wait for it.

I have been away and now I’m back. It was a good trip to see my parents in Dubai. I have so much to share. I am so jet lagged. For now though, here is a sneak peak into my design obsession this trip.

Have a great rest of the weekend.
