Aloha!

A note about mochatini birthday giveaway last week. I am extending it another day so you still have time to enter. I’ll be accepting entries until the end of the day.

And now, here is a lovely guest blogger, heather thompson. Heather is an artist and designer based out of nashville, TN. Her amazing life involves decorative painting for clients in nashville. If that was enough on her plate, this amazingly talented lady also has an etsy store selling art, clothes, jewelry and more. Her vintage inspired design blog, gathering spriggs is a daily read for me. Take it away heather..

Greetings Mochatini readers! Its such an honor to be here with you today to share the fabulous Australian homewares shop: Whiteport. Founder, Jennifer McCabe has an impecible design sensibility and even shoots all products in her beach house on the northern shores of Sydney. She also pens the Whiteport blog with inspiring design ideas, images of her home, and product placement ideas. McCabe has a beach cottage sensibility in her own home ,but encourages customers to pursue white as an accent toward any decor: Urban chic, to modern country. I especially love the natural linen furniture and white pitchers and pottery.  How about you? What do you love about white, its power as a striking accent or would you do an entire room bathed in white?

Hi my dears, hope you are having a good week. Today is a big day for me. It involves a photo shoot of my home and my tabletop designs. To say I am excited is an understatement. I’ll be sharing details with you as soon as I can. While I am busy with the shoot, I leave you with a post from a wonderful woman.

Allow me to introduce today’s guest blogger Monika of Splendid Willow. Monika is a dear dear blogging friend and has been an incredible pillar of support to mochatini and me. Her passion for decorating is indulgent. Her charming home in Seattle, WA and inspiring blog Splendid Willow are attributes to her distinct twist on Swedish style. It is a real pleasure having her here today…without any delay, take it away mon.

Hello! Monika from Splendid Willow here. When Manvi invited me to write a guest post on her lovely blog, I felt more than honored. Not only is she very talented and creative (and her blog so inspirational), I also consider her a very dear friend. Manvi asked me to write something about design linked to my Swedish roots. So, this is what I consider – Simply Swedish.

Swedes crave light. For many long winter months the country sees very little light and the people do everything they can to let the light into their homes. No wonder gallons and gallons of white paint is the main staple in most Swedish homes.

Hardwood Floors. The Scandinavians love their hardwoods floors. And they show them off with pride. Area rugs on top of the floors, yes. But wall-to-wall carpeting makes most true  Swedes totally nervous. (Never know what’s hiding in those carpets…).

Swedes like it clutter free. And to them, less is definitely more. Most people prefer to save for that very special object rather than to be caught up in mass consumption.

I personally think the Swedes are masters when it comes to mixing old with new – whether it is architecture, art  or interior design. And they do it so effortlessly. Sweden is an old country where the “Modern Sweden” emerged in 16th century. The country is filled with lovely old treasures. On the other end of the spectrum,  Sweden is a highly modernized state-of-the-art technology country. That mix, between long ago days and today,  is something I so take to heart.

Swedes showcase their books with pride (and books are not props, they are meant to be read!). Don’t hide the key that tells people what you are all about!

Swedes love and respect mother nature. And their love is so apparent in all the organic materials and colors the Swedes love to use in their homes.

Swedes treasure time off work and would rather take more vacation days than salary increases. Many Swedes are saving for or dreaming about their own weekend/vacation homes where simple living, closeness to quiet and to nature are priorities. I so heart this spot between the sky and the ocean. What a place to unwind!

Thank you so much for reading all the way to here! I had fun sharing a dose of Sweden with you. I wish you a happy rest of the week! Cyber hug, Monika.

Hi dears, while I am dodging falling branches and hoping for minimal damage to my house and yard {the noise of the chainsaw is driving me crazy}, here is a guest post from Renee Rodriguez. Renee runs a design studio renee rodriguez designs where she creates custom wedding invitations and stationery. Her designs are fun, chic and super cute! Here she is -

First, thank you to Manvi for having me as her guest today; I am totally thrilled and honored to be here at Mochatini.

A little bit about me  – I have a fine arts degree from the University of Michigan.  I was trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance and spent a great deal of time in the theater. My love of the theater led me to the world of fashion and eight years of running a small boutique.  Currently I’m a marketing director and a freelance designer. Most importantly I am a mom to an artsy, imaginative and Cinderella obsessed five year old, Oliva.

I decided to create a blog because I wanted a place to document not only my designs and images that I find beautiful and inspiring, but also highlight the talent of others.  The things that fascinate and influence me as an artist are the details and craftsmanship of vintage couture, anything by Coco Chanel and luxurious interiors blended with modern design.

I love to combine clean, modern lines with a little something swanky and fabulous. I would love the Italian designed cocktail ring or glittering crystal and gold clutch paired with my favorite jeans, or maybe a pair of ballet flats adorned with small gold bows, all extravagantly elegant and enchanting.

I think by surrounding yourself with beautiful objects, which have been created with the utmost care, and exquisite details, will bring a touch of elegance to your world.  Like the sparkling subtleties of a crystal chandelier paired with a modern loveseat or a period lamp, updated with a stylish shade or a collection of pearl necklaces paired with t-shirt and jeans can be the dazzling touch to make you feel quite remarkable any day of the week.

hope over to renee’s blog and say hello. you can find her designs here

Hello, my fantastic buddies. Thanks for your kind words on my guest room. I need to replace the lamps and add a curtain rod. I’ll share the final pics of the whole room after that. The regrouting didn’t work as well as I had anticipated. Dont get me wrong, it looks MUCH better than before, just not as bright white as I had expected. I still have to scrub off the residue and clean it up….which I better get to soon.

However, not without introducing you to this week’s guest. Sharalee from Escapade – in search of a life more fabulous aka A life more fabulous blog. The first thing that had me hooked to her blog was a quote by Coco Chanel – “A girl should be two things, classy and fabulous”, yep, yep. That was followed by pages and pages of fresh bright interior, fashion and travel inspiration and now I cant do without my daily fix of a life more fabulous. Did you know Sharalee grew up in Zimbabwe? Yep and is well traveled.  I cant wait to share her current inspirations with you. Here she is…

A life more fabulous -

So excited to be invited to guest post here at Mochatini! I’ve been feeling especially inspired at the moment – right at the start of what I find to be the most exciting season. For me, Spring is always a time to get back to basics, clear away all the clutter and start afresh. I find myself craving delicate fabrics and crisp white sheets. Bright, open windows and light flooding through soft sheer curtains. Air space to clear your thoughts, breathe deeply, refresh and renew.

Hello all. Thank you for such sweet emails and comments about my health. You are the best. The sun is out and I am doing so much better.

And now I’d like to introduce you to this week’s guest blogger – Carole King from the dear designers blog. Carole is an interior designer and lives on the other side of the pond. She shares her passion for interiors with us and also offers design services for free. How generous!

Take it away Carole-

Hi, I’m Carole from Dear Designer’s Blog.  I’m feel honoured to be writing today on Manvi’s inspirational Mochatini.

I thought I’d take the opportunity to tell everyone how much I am influenced by travel in my creative life and in my decorating style.

Firstly, I should explain that I am a complete travel junkie.  Anywhere, anytime (funds permitting of course) is my mantra.  In the past year I have been to California, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe, next week I am off to Krakow, and later this year I am planning a trip to India.  City or country, hotels or camping, trekking or cruising I love it all.

And this is what I come back with……….

Image: The Society Inc

Photographs. They are the most evocative of souvenirs and I use them all the time on mood boards.  A collection of memories that can conjure up smell, moods, feelings, emotions and the most incredible colour combinations.

Majorelle Gardens, Marrakech by Dear Designer

A single photograph can remind you of the relief of escaping the blistering heat in Marrakech and discovering the most incredibly beautiful garden.  The sound of the tinkling water, the cooling green of the plants and the surprising blue of the house and fountain.  I would love to replicate this in my own garden.

Souvenirs.  I have a rule that the only things I can buy are those that will fit into my backpack or suitcase.  I love the contrast of dark woods and ethnic busts against pale walls and arranged with mirrors and glass to add some sparkle.  Shown here a Buddha head from Thailand, a woman’s bust from Zimbabwe, carved candlesticks from South Africa and a framed ink drawing from Vietnam (reflected in the mirror).

Image: Focal Point Blogspot

Jewellery.  Provides constant inspiration for colours and textures.  It also looks amazing displayed in baskets and in glass boxes or hung from hooks on the wall

Image: Rebecca Ford

Fabrics.  I have a collection of tablecloths from Peru, much like the ones above.  They are too vibrant to sit easily with my colour schemes at home but in the summer I use them in the garden and they look fabulous.

Image: MyMarrakesh

I am hoping that on my next trip to North Africa that I will be returning with a Moroccan wedding blanket.  Collectables like these are not passing fashion statements, they are exquisitely crafted works of art and will become family heirlooms.

Suzani image: The City Sage

Each layer of decoration added to a home contributes to its uniqueness and tells a story.  This is something that can’t be achieved by buying everything from the same store.

Image: James Merrill

Shells.  And all those things you can pick up on the beach for free!  I have a few shells that remind me of scuba diving in Egypt and Jamaica.  They look fantastic grouped together and under glass domes.

Image: Living etc

Artwork.  Easy enough to roll up and put in the bag.  Ethnic, historical, landscapes, local photography, anything that takes your fancy and inspires you in some way could become the beginning of a collection.

Hanneke Wagenaar

The above pictures were painted by my guide in Venezuela and now sit in my office.  (She doesn’t have a website but if anyone is interested I will happily put you in touch)

Which just leaves me to say, that if money were no object, my home would look something like this……….

Thank you so much Manvi.  I have enjoyed putting this together and hope your readers enjoy it too.  Carole.

The Crown

I discovered The Crown whilst blog surfing, and unlike most hotel reviews, it really stayed with me. A great way to describe it is as a “boutique townhouse inn.”   The Crown is a 21st century inn in the heart of Woodbridge, Suffolk.  What really makes this place special is the gorgeous, gorgeous interior design by Bentheim.  You’ll see what I mean –

image via http://www.bentheim.co.uk

I’ve never quite seen such a mastery of country and modern – it’s a perfect blend of serenity, and creates an environment where one could clear his or her mind and really focus, or truly relax.

Even the bathroom is minimalist without being cold.

images via http://www.bentheim.co.uk

On the hotel site I found a great description of the space – “Our ten very individual bedrooms, as with downstairs, ooze comfort and simplicity, emphasising relaxation over style and indulgence over fussiness – a home from home, but with more than a little luxury. Our bedrooms feature plump goose-down pillows, mattresses fit for royalty (they have the warrant to prove it), crisp cotton bedlinen, Italian lighting and lots of personal touches. Bathrooms have under-floor heating and French organic toiletries. “  Not too shabby eh?

The design firm also decorated the hotel’s luxury dining facilities. I’ll leave those details to the food blogs.

The picturesque village of Woodbridge.

Dreamy no?

Hi sweets. I promised to supply you with tons of inspiration while I am on a little vacation in aspen and inspiration is just what you will find in today’s guest post by Charlotta Ward. Charlotta, from the blog space for inspiration is an artist, design and interior stylist for children. Orginally from Sweden, she has lived in several corners of the world and currently calls Sydney, Australia her home. She is an amazingly warm and courageous mother of two lovely children and I am proud to call her my blogging friend. She also authors a second blog charlotta ward. So, without anymore from me, here is charlotta -

Tropical Bliss

Hello everyone, my name is Charlotta and I am delighted to be here and write this guest post for the gorgeous Manvi!

My heritage is Swedish but for the last 11 years I have lived in Sydney, Australia. As my blog ‘Space for Inspiration‘ spills over with design impressions  from the motherland, I thought I would devote this guest post to life in the tropics.

Though I have country-hopped for over 20 years (‘Euro-trash’) the transition from the old world sophistication of Europe to the exotic and casual lifestyle of tropical Australia was a little overwhelming.

Packing my bikini next to my laptop each morning and leaping from a boardroom meeting straight to the beach for an early evening swim seemed too good to be true at first. Actually it took me a couple of years to stop pinching myself..

The actual pace of living is different and it is true that with a warmer climate comes a more relaxed attitude to life in general.

Being ‘comfortable’ and ‘at ease’ are much higher rated than being ‘correct’ or ‘formally stylish’, and this may be the key difference between Stockholm & Sydney. (Just try suggesting a ‘no-worries-mate’ kind of attitude to a Stockholmer in mid -November…)

When in Australia I find myself wanting to spend most of my time outside – be that in on the beach, in a deck chair under a (spider free..) tree or sipping a cold drink by the pool. As such a stylish hammock, fabulous cushions for the garden chairs and a brilliant lantern for the porch become much more important than that designer rug for the guest-room. I find this very refreshing, especially after my 8 years in London where the (read: ‘my’) focus was on chic and sober sophistication. Comfort came second to looking fabulous and living stylishly.

That said, the basic approach to design here is very similar to that of my beloved Scandinavia (I was quite surprised..) – simplicity, comfort and practicality are key and I find that the base for most environments here, like in Sweden, is white.

Decor accents tend to be stronger however, and the hot weather and colourful surroundings inspire bolder decor moves. Suddenly feel it is OK to choose the bright red cushions rather than the more elegant (and sensible) muted ones..

Though my Swedish heart still beats for the frosty North, I love life in this tropical paradise and I could go on forever about the bliss of life here. I will however love & leave you now with promise to be more generous with tropical inspiration in my own blog from here on.

G’day & Hejdå all – hope to see you over at mine soon.

x Charlotta

Hop over and say hello to Charlotta on her blog space for inspiration.

Hello dears, today’s guest post is by the newly married Jen Ramos of Made by Girl. Congrats Jen!

Jen is the owner of Made By Girl, and Im sure you must have seen her pretty LOVE and BLOGS and COFFEE posters. Jen recently gave her home office a fantastic makeover that she, like me, shares it with her husband. I am always on the look out for spaces that are not only stylish but also work for a couple, which is why I knew I had to ask her to talk to us about it.

Here is a before pic -

So without further delay, here is jen talking about her office makeover.

Home office makeover

Hello, im Jen Ramos… Author of Made By Girl blog. I’m currently the owner of an online shop called Made By Girl. There you will find a fun & colorful collection of cards & screen prints to send to your friends or decorate your home! Feel free to visit my blog for the most inspirational interior spaces, my DIY projects and so much more!

The reason I decided to re-do my office was because I felt it wasn’t as inspirational to me or my work anymore.

I really needed to accentuate the large windows in my office and getting the curtains helped do just that.  It looks & feels brighter making the outside appear as though it were indoors.
My inspiration came from various work spaces I saw on blogs.

I gathered about 10 photos of work spaces that inspired me & just headed in that direction with the renovation.  Paying attention to every detail, like how many shelves would be just enough for my books, the placement of my inspiration board as well as which direction the desks would be facing.

I even drew everything out on piece of paper (prior to the renovation) to get a better feel of where each item would be placed & how it would fit together.

My goal was to accomplish a brighter, more stylish and roomier space……I think I’ve achieved that & am extremely happy with the results!
